Les oiseaux marins bio-indicateurs des écosystèmes austraux : niveaux de contaminants métalliques et organiques, explication écologique et évaluation critique
L’Océan Austral, longtemps considéré comme préservé de la pollution due aux activités humaines, est reconnu aujourd’hui comme étant soumis à la redistribution globale des contaminants par la voie atmosphérique et océanique. Ainsi, des contaminants métalliques et organiques, connus pour être toxiques pour l’homme et la biodiversité, peuvent atteindre les organismes vivant dans ces écosystèmes éloignés. Notamment, les oiseaux marins, du fait de leur longévité et de leur position élevée dans les réseaux trophiques, peuvent intégrer des concentrations préoccupantes de contaminants suite aux processus de bioaccumulation et de biomagnification. Ils sont donc considérés comme de bons bio-indicateurs de l’état de contamination des écosystèmes. L’Océan Austral abrite une grande diversité d’espèces d’oiseaux marins ; cependant, leurs niveaux de contamination sont encore très mal connus, en particulier dans le sud de l’Océan Indien, où se trouvent les Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF : île d’Amsterdam dans la zone subtropicale, Archipels de Kerguelen et de Crozet dans la zone subantarctique et Terre Adélie en Antarctique).

Dans ce contexte et dans le cadre de l’ANR POLARTOP (porteur O. Chastel), ma thèse vise à :

  • 1) décrire les niveaux de contaminants métalliques (Hg, Cd, Pb, Ag, As, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se, V et Zn) et organiques (pesticides organochlorés et leurs métabolites, PCBs et PBDEs) dans les TAAF en utilisant les oiseaux marins comme bio-indicateurs de la contamination des écosystèmes ;
  • 2) déterminer les facteurs explicatifs qui gouvernent la bioaccumulation chez ces organismes en relation avec les zones d’alimentation et de migration, la position trophique, les stratégies de mue, les variations spécifiques, ontogéniques, sexuelles et individuelles ;
  • 3) identifier les espèces bio-indicatrices les plus appropriées pour un suivi sur le long terme de la contamination des TAAF (bio-monitoring).

Pour répondre à ces objectifs, les niveaux des contaminants métalliques et organiques seront déterminés dans le sang (exposition courte) et dans les plumes (exposition longue) d’une grande diversité d’espèces (manchots, albatros, pétrels, skuas) sur un large gradient latitudinal (de la zone subtropicale à l’Antarctique). Les relations entre bioaccumulation des contaminants et écologie alimentaire seront étudiées essentiellement grâce à la méthode des isotopes stables du carbone (proxy de l’habitat de recherche alimentaire) et de l’azote (proxy du niveau trophique). Une étude approfondie sur une espèce emblématique, le grand albatros Diomedea exulans, qui fait l’objet d’un suivi démographique débuté sur l’Archipel de Crozet depuis les années 1960, permettra d’établir le lien potentiel entre la charge en contaminants et les traits de vie individuels des oiseaux (sexe, âge, caractéristiques morphologiques, écologie alimentaire, statut reproducteur, qualité individuelle et expérience).


Les missions de terrain seront réalisées dans le cadre des programmes 109 et 394 (IPEV–CEBC). Les dosages des contaminants métalliques et des isotopes stables seront réalisés à l’UMR LIENSs (P. Bustamante, UMR-CNRS 7266, Université de La Rochelle) et les dosages des polluants organiques à l’UMR EPOC (H. Budzinski, UMR-CNRS 5805, Université Bordeaux I).
