Thèmes de Recherche.
Mes recherches portent principalement sur la mesure et l’interprétation des mouvements de la croûte terrestre, à terre comme en mer.
A terre, nous utilisons les mesures GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems, le GPS étant le système GNSS américain). Ces données nous permettent en particulier d’estimer les mouvements verticaux de la croûte avec une précision sub-centimétrique et donc d’évaluer les contributions respectives des mouvements du sol et de l’océan dans l’évolution du niveau marin relatif à la côte, quantité importante en termes d’aléa et vulnérabilité littorale. Par exemple, au Vanuatu, où les inondations littorales récentes sont parfois problématiques, nous avons montré la contribution dominante des mouvements verticaux du sol (en lien avec le cycle sismique lié à la subduction de la plaque Australienne sous la bordure de la plaque Pacifique) par rapport à la montée absolue du niveau marin, dans ces inondations. Sur ces aspects, je contribue à des projets menés avec des géographes dans une démarche interdisciplinaire.

En mer, les ondes électro-magnétiques utilisées en GNSS ne se propageant pas sous l’eau, on utilise d’autres méthodes pour positionner des points en domaine sous-marin et celles-ci sont différentes selon les composantes verticales et horizontales.

Pour le vertical, j’utilise la pression en fond de mer, couplées éventuellement avec des mesures de la hauteur de la surface de l’eau par altimétrie ou GNSS. Je travaille sur des chantiers en domaine marin profond, comme dans le cadre de l’observatoire MoMAR (Monitoring of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge) au sud des Açores, ou sur des chantiers plus proches de la côte, par exemple, au Vanuatu ou à Mayotte dans l’océan Indien où la naissance d’un nouveau volcan sous-marin génère un nouvel aléa littoral que la communauté cherche à évaluer.

Pour la composante horizontale, les mesures sont basées sur les ondes acoustiques qui se propagent efficacement sous l’eau. On peut alors utiliser les temps de propagation acoustique entre des balises installées au fond (distancemétrie acoustique) ; c’est ce que nous avons fait en Mer de Marmara pour quantifier les mouvements actuels de la faille Nord-Anatolienne sous l’eau et contribuer ainsi à l’évaluation de l’aléa sismique pour la mégalopole d’Istambul.

Par ailleurs, en marge de mes activités ciblées plutôt dans le domaine de la Terre Solide, je porte au laboratoire le projet de drone marin PAMELi (Plateforme Autonome Multicapteurs pour l’Exploration du Littoral), dans une optique de mutualisation des sorties en mer, et avec pour objectif de favoriser les recherches à l’interface entre les disciplines par l’acquisition de données co-localisées, simultanées et archivées dans une base de données pérenne et accessible
