Scientific objectives

The LIENSs Joint Research Unit aims to answer three fundamental questions:

How does the coastal system function at all scales, from the molecule to the global scale, from a physical, chemical, biological and societal point of view? How do the different spatial and temporal scales and the different contexts interact?
In a context of global change and increasing anthropogenic pressure, how is the coastal system evolving? How are the different components of the system adapting to changes? How have coastal societies adapted in the past? How can this evolution be predicted, anticipated and supported?
How is the coastline used and exploited? How can it be developed in a sustainable way?

In the background, the whole issue of adaptation to changes — whether geophysical, chemical, biological, ecological or societal — in a coastal zone in the broad sense, transforming under anthropogenic pressure in a context of climate change, is also the common thread running through the research carried out in our laboratory.
