[Observatory website :] Sea Level Observation Service
SONEL’s main objective is to collect and disseminate coastal sea-level observations recorded by tide gauges, ensuring the highest possible metrological quality. These data provide researchers with the information they need to address the questions currently being raised about changes affecting the various components of sea level : Is mean sea level rising ? Where ? How ? Why ? Are storm surges more frequent today ? And so on.
Answering these questions depends on the acquisition of long time series of sea-level records. Synergies between tide-gauge measurements and other measurement techniques are also key to interpreting these observations, particularly precise space-based positioning techniques (GPS, DORIS, etc.), which make it possible to verify the geodetic stability of the ground on which tide gauges are installed.
